A few things, like so often when I post here these days.

As I said in a prior post, I’m slogging my way through a few more romance novels, and a question keeps coming up – Is the “zing” a real thing, or is it a genre conceit? Other than static electricity, I’ve never felt anything like that myself, that realization at first touch that the person touching me or that I’m touching is some sort of “the one” (I’m not a big believer in “the one” anyway, and my misreading of that concept in the past makes me far more wary about it).

A friend of mine put forth the idea a long while ago that the best recourse for rigid people with closed minds is to put them in patent leather catsuits – he claimed that’d fix them right up. I remain skeptical regarding his premise, but I’m starting to wonder if his idea would work.

I ran into a quote from Oscar Wilde that may be my new favorite of his: “I’m too old to know everything.” Concise, to the point, and full of nuance.

We did a long editing session on Thursday – seven hours across 105 pages. Déjà vu 2: Jamais Vu has 125 pages to go. The final one in the trilogy is spell checked and I’ve put heading breaks in it so things don’t go too long in it for both the reader and my editor. I’m working on a side story for the trilogy, one set concurrent to the second novel, again like the other side story involving an outside perspective looking in on the action in part of the second novel. I don’t think this one will take long to write, and then I can put this universe to rest.

I got some news that may be positive – thanks to my suppressed immune system, as I learned two years ago, things a healthy immune system can shrug off run the risk of hospitalizing me, and not on a “need some healing” standpoint, but instead on a saving my life level. As such I’m not willing to risk being in closed spaces with other people, because so many of them are, for me, the equivalent of plague rats. One of my favorite bands, one I first caught on a Tuesday night at the Deep Ellum club the Prophet Bar back in 1987, is playing a show at the State Fair of Texas. I’d love to get to that show, though there are still a lot of logistics to deal with, and I for sure wouldn’t go somewhere on my own thanks to the politicization of social thought at this time, but if there’s a way I’ll do what I can to facilitate me being there. And in case someone’s wondering, the band is Ten Hands.

There are a lot of things I could focus on next, so the real task is picking something or getting inspired to create something new. I’ve got a couple of possible ideas, but they haven’t gotten past story starts or idea sketches yet.

I caught a wonderful reading of an article about the Miles Davis estate and how his three heirs are managing to avoid some of the pitfalls other heirs to important artists’ output find themselves mired in. I didn’t know that he was doing the same thing Frank Zappa did, recording all of his shows as soon as he got technology that allowed him to do so. Interesting article.

I’m sure I’m forgetting something, but the great thing about an online journal is the ease of creating another entry.
